Wind on I-40

Here we are in Jerome, our first stop on our trip to the Salton Sea.  We’re here for a few days where I’m photographing artwork for a friend.  We’re hoping to leave on Tuesday for Southern California weather permitting.  The drive on Saturday was challenging and long.  The wind started picking up just before the Arizona/New Mexico border and got worse as we drove west.  When we reached Holbrook we could see a wall of dust in the distance.  Between Holbrook and Winslow, conditions worsened on I-40, visibility decreased, and everyone slowed down to a crawl.  Debris blew across the highway like shrapnel as we drove through pockets of total brown-out. White-knuckling it down I-40, Jim wrote a poem about Arizona, and Bodie slept….

On the road to Salton Sea

We hit the road today just ahead of the storm that is expected to deliver more snow to Colorado. The drive south through Taos was beautiful and the lighting was fantastic. Even the hills in Santa Fe had a bit of snow. We’re changing our plans due to the weather this week and are heading further south to the Salton Sea where it’s expected to be warmer than Death Valley. There’s plenty of material there to photograph and the subjects at Salton Sea are perfect for gravure printing…
