Today I tested a new negative with an entirely different tonal scale. I decided to run tests on “Wheel” because I wanted to see how large areas of low values would print on cyanotype. This print was exposed for 9 minutes and was bleached in a diluted bath of Mrs. Stewart’s Liquid Bluing. The product lifted the values nicely and was slow working. I was impressed with the way it cleared the high values without bleaching them too much. After bluing, I toned the print in tannic acid which deepened the low values and provided an overall warm tone. I enjoyed combining the tannic acid toning with the bluing bleach for this print. The image tone seems appropriate for the subject.
Wheel, Death Valley. Pinhole-Cyanotype. 9 minute exposure in UV box, developed in water, bleached in Liquid Bluing, toned in tannic acid.
