Camp Pinhole: The Mystery of the Moving Soap
April 9th, 2008 by laura | Filed under Laura Campbell Fine Art.I think we have a ghost at camp pinhole. Our camp is located in the foothills of Mt. Whitney which only seems to encourage the wind. Yesterday, a ghost blew in with the wind and moved our bar of Burt’s Bees biodegradable soap. When we left for the day, the soap was resting comfortably on a small rock ledge. When we returned, the soap had moved four feet up a sheer rock face. Upon inspecting the soap, we noticed small gouges and assumed an animal had moved the soap. The soap was placed back on its ledge and we retired for the night. Last night the wind blew full force. We slept in the back of the truck and even the truck moved in the wind. It was like sleeping on a ship without the luxury of Dramamine. This morning, when we came up on deck, we noticed the soap had moved again during the night to the exact same spot four feet up the face of the rock. Strangely, small articles such as our dish sponge and plastic coffee cup, hadn’t moved a millimeter. We abandoned our small animal theory and went back to the drawing board. Was it a person, a coyote? A big foot who likes to stay clean? Since the coffee girls are a wealth of information and frequently predict the weather more accurately than the Las Vegas Bureau, we made a beeline for the coffee shop hoping for further insight. There we learned there are ghosts in these hills! Perhaps this calls for some nighttime pinhole photography. Stay tuned for Part 2….
