Pinhole Photo: Sierra and Reflection on Owens Lake

March 31st, 2008 by laura | No Comments | Filed in Laura Campbell Fine Art

Greetings from my camp at the base of the Sierra’s. I’m here until Wednesday or so waiting for a shipment of film expected to arrive in the next day or so. This is a great spot to camp. There is Big Sage everywhere, the wind has quieted down, I have a panoramic view of the mountains, and I picked up a signal for my mobile broadband which seems to be holding steady for now.

This is the latest pinhole, taken yesterday on the service road that runs across the length of Owens (Dry) Lake. The north end of the lake is being watered, under court order, to keep the toxic dust down.

I used about a 2 second exposure to record the scene. The original print shows a subtle and pretty gradation that was difficult to preserve in the scan…

Pinhole Photo: Darwin Ghost Town Revisited

March 28th, 2008 by laura | No Comments | Filed in Laura Campbell Fine Art

Today marked my third visit to Darwin.  The town was very quiet when I arrived at high noon.  The only sounds I heard were multiple explosions and Pierre whizzing around town in his Volkswagen bus.  Pierre stopped on his third pass to invite me to check out his property. The explosions continued on and off for the two hours that I was in town.

The old car that I recorded is a Renault.

The funny thing about this car is all the chrome is in perfect condition, glinting proudly in the sun like a gold tooth.

These cool cabins sit behind the old Post Office which I photographed the other day.

A few days ago, an old fire truck was parked next to the tanker truck.  The fire truck was moved.  Perhaps it is on a call. The only sign that the fire truck was ever there was a huge oil spill slowly baking in the sun.  More photos of Darwin are posted on my main photoblog: http://laura-campbell.net
